Mysterious Italy
|
I visited Italy 2 years ago. My home base
was on the Island of La Maddalena. This is raw beauty, I have always appreciated
the painting of Parrish. I thought that the rocky scenes, the colors of
the terrain, and the crystal waters depicted in his paintings were the
fantasy of his mind. I discovered this beauty in the Mediterranean.
This
is one of the lovely beaches on the island of Sardinia. This is a paradise.
The
vendors in Italy loved to see me coming. If you manage to visit Italy,
you will not have the full experience if you don't visit one of the street
markets that occur in every city at least one day during the week.
The
nuraghi stone monuments of Italy gained my undivided attention. I made
a number of visits to various Nuraghi sites throughout Sardinia.
This picture is of Lie Lolghi, and it is Sardinia's largest Giant's Tomb.
Sardinia is a beautiful
Mediterranean island and is a vast field of investigation for
archaeologists and
archaeologist "wantabes" (like me). All ask who are
the mythic Shardana? Why are there over 7,000 ancient towers called "nuraghi"
(older than the Scottish "brochs")? Who were the builders of
the so called "giant's tombs"? The locals call the rock cut
tombs fairy and witch houses because of the magical energy associated
with them.
Lie Lolghi is Sardinia's largest Giant's Tomb (tomba di giganti).
These monuments were constructed all over the island -mainly by the Nuraghi
builders- from about 1900 BC until the destructive nearly one thousand
years later due to an invasion by Carthage. The first Giant's Tombs, however,
could date from the second half of the 3rd millennium BC, and could have
been used up to the end of the Iron Age. The Li Lolghi, was built in the
middle of the Bronze Age.
The stones around these monuments have an "unusual" energy.
Scientists have visited these sites to determine if the energy could be
measured. Whatever the energy is, there are many reports of spontaneous
healings occurring after people have touched the rocks on the monuments.
Perhaps those buried in these tombs knew secrets of energy that we are
only beginning to discover about the human energy system..
This collective burial chamber is very long, with a series of uprights
and it was once covered with stones or earth. The burial chamber looks to me like a depiction of a womb, representing the birthing to a new dimension.
The tomb is like the one at Coddu Vecchiu. It
features a horned semi-circular front court which was probably used as
a meeting place for rituals. The shapes of the tombs' wedged ends are
reminiscent of Minorcan monuments.
The Coddu Vecchiu Giant's Tomb its entrance has a carved stone slab, a
horizontal slab, and an arch above; a small opening at the base was blocked
by a stone. I attempted to enter the opening of one of the tombs I discovered
in Northern Sardinia, but was unsuccessful. I thought that perhaps entering
without proper ritual, was a sacrilege.
An experiment conducted at a site I visited in Northern Sardinia involved
an accidental discovery. If you visit Italy you will discover that ice
is not readily available. When traveling one may freeze drinks to insure
themselves cool refreshment when stopping for a rest. It so happened that
scientists traveling about to study the Nuraghi tombs, and archeological
sites did just that, froze water for a refreshing drink. During their
investigation which involved instruments that resembled geiger counters
(according to the guide) a bottle of frozen water was placed on one of
the rocks for convenience. To the scientist's surprise, the water boiled
in the bottle.. The rocks were not hot, but the water was inexplicably
boiling in the bottle on the rocks. Apparently the scientists were not
able to detect any energy which was measurable, thought they certainly
had a first hand account.
Built from 2300 BC onwards, Sardinian Giant's Tombs have undergone many
repairs over many years, and the ultimate plans for restoration will likely
take lots of money, and manpower.. At Coddu Vecchiu the front court is
about 41 ft wide and is composed of 11 upright slabs; the chamber is almost
33 ft long. The tombs I visited were likely victims of those seeking fortune,
perhaps gold and jewels. Apparently there are plans to attempt to re-establish
the original image of these creations, or so how they are assumed
to have appeared.
This
is the Giant's Tomb
at Coddu Vecchiu.
There is a lot more to the Nuraghi structures. I will place one more
picture here for your viewing pleasure.
This
is an interesting over-view of a Nuraghi site. Throughout Sardinia and
La Maddalena you will find small metal sculptures for sale in the tourist
gift shops. These sculpture were buried with the Nuraghi. Each sculpture
appears to depict the person's standing, or position in their culture.
I would love to take a group to Sardinia, La Maddalena, and Corsica to
visit these mysterious sites, and many other mystical hideaways nestled
in the dramatic landscape of these Mediterranean islands.
